VERTEX was retained by an insurance company to manage an environmental claim at a gasoline station with leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs). At the time of the UST system removal activities, a release was identified and reported to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The insured’s consultant initiated excavation of approximately 3,100 tons of visually impacted soils for off-site disposal. A Final Assessment Report (FAR) was submitted to the MDEQ, recommending monitored natural attenuation and a deed restricted closure.
VERTEX provided oversight during UST system removal and identified the exact source of the release as a leaky submersible turbine pump (STP) sump. VERTEX identified two (2) historical releases associated with the site. Based on the review of historical data and VERTEX’s field observations, it was determined that approximately 1,475 tons of the excavated soils were associated with historical releases at the site, resulting in a savings of approximately $55,000.
