The New Broughton Hospital is a psychiatric hospital, providing treatment for individuals living in the Western part of North Carolina. It is located in Morganton, North Carolina, in a central location between Asheville, Charlotte, and Raleigh. This new state of the art facility will replace the historic Hospital which was originally built in 1880. The project is a 480,000 SF facility on a 74-acre site. The project includes 382 beds for acute, geriatric, medical, adolescent, forensic, and long-term mental health patients. These beds are configured in patient care units (PCU’s) containing 12 single and 6 double occupancy rooms as well as patient and staff support areas. Besides the PCU’s, the facility provides treatment malls (classrooms, dining, and recreation areas), patient support (clinics, dental, and lab facilities) and administrative support. The building was designed with large segments separated by internal courtyards, which allows the hospital to treat patients with similar conditions in small groups, as chosen by the Department of Health and Human Services. This differential feature of the hospital provides to the patients the feeling of living in an apartment complex or a classroom environment. VERTEX was retained in 2017 as the Construction Manager to assist with the completion of the remaining work.
