VERTEX is serving as the Owner’s Project Manager for the Town of Norwood for the new Dr. Philip O. Coakley Middle School Project. The Town was approved by the MSBA to analyze two options for its Middle School population: grade 6-8 (current configuration) and grade 5-8. VERTEX established a process and helped manage the school committee and school building committee to arrive at a conclusion that best suited the Town’s long-term interest. After analyzing both tangible impacts (physical space and financial) and intangible impacts (educational environment and resistance to change), the Town elected to move forward with a 5-8 grade school which will also ease overcrowding in its elementary schools. By employing a transparent and continuous public outreach program, the Town was able to achieve remarkable consensus with unanimous endorsements from both school committee and select board. The new school will be 188,000 SF and include a 600 seat auditorium, 4 dedicated STEM labs, as well as synthetic turf multi-purpose field. Its design is intentionally divided into a lower (grades 5 and 6) and an upper (grades 7 and 8) school with individual dining and teacher collaboration spaces.
