VERTEX was retained by a church’s insurance company to investigate an approximately 135-foot tall church bell tower to determine if it had been struck by lightning. A piece of the bell tower had broken off, damaging the slate tile roof below. VERTEX visited the site and, using a boom lift, inspected the condition of the bell tower. VERTEX also reviewed local weather data and lightning strike reports. Ultimately, VERTEX was able to determine areas of the bell tower which required repair due to deferred maintenance, and the cause of the displaced piece from a recent lightning strike.
VERTEX’s observations and findings were presented to the insurance company in a written report. The insurance company then retained VERTEX’s building consulting experts to complete a repair estimate for the conditions associated with the lightning strike.
