Sustainable Municipal Building Delivered Under Budget in Littleton, MA

The Center on Shattuck Street, located in Littleton, Massachusetts, is a newly constructed 16,000-square-foot facility that officially opened to the public on May 16, 2025. Serving as the new home for the town’s Elder and Human Services department, the center offers an array of amenities designed to support the community. The building includes administrative offices, Veteran Affairs services, multiple exercise areas, a fully operational kitchen, and a large multipurpose room equipped with modern audio/visual capabilities. The multipurpose space was designed with flexibility in mind—it can be divided for smaller group programming or opened into one expansive room to host community meals, social events, and recreational activities such as pickleball.

The Town of Littleton retained VERTEX as the Owner’s Project Manager to guide the project from initial planning through construction and completion. Faced with a tight project site and limited staging opportunities, VERTEX worked with the town to utilize a neighboring vacant residence as a field office. In collaboration with the contractor, improvements were made to the residence to support future resale, adding long-term value to the town. Throughout the project, VERTEX provided oversight on schedule, design, and budget management to ensure the project stayed on track while meeting the town’s goals for function, sustainability, and cost efficiency.

The Center on Shattuck was delivered under budget, allowing remaining funds to be returned to the Town. Through a strong local fundraising effort, additional amenities such as fitness equipment and outdoor furnishings were purchased without impacting the core project budget. Sustainability was also a central component of the project. The building is fossil-free and fully electric, with solar panels installed on the roof to help offset energy consumption. This photovoltaic system was partially funded by a state earmark secured by the Town of Littleton, underscoring it’s dedication to climate-conscious infrastructure.

VERTEX is proud to have supported Littleton in delivering a forward-thinking facility that will benefit residents for years to come—an example of thoughtful design, responsible project management, and meaningful community investment.
